The .303 British Mk VIIz (and later Mk VIIIz) rounds were loaded with 41 grains (2.66 g) of Dupont No. 16 single-base smokeless powder, based on nitrocellulose flake-shaped propellants. The nitrocellulose versions, first introduced in World War I, were designated with a "Z" postfix with a bullet weight of 175 grains (11.34 g).
Most bottleneck rimmed cartridges from the late 1880s and 1890 fell into disuse by the end of the First World War. The .303 British is one of a handful of bottlenecked, rimmed centerfire rifle cartridges still in common use today (.22 Hornet, .30-30 Winchester and 7.62×54R).
